Just Wait for the Paint to Dry

This is my newest mantra. No, I’m not just sitting and watching paint actually dry…although, could that be good for me?? What I am doing, is practicing patience through this process of creating and learning new things. At times, that means I’ve needed to step away from a design to literally let the paint dry because I’m getting frustrated with how it’s turning out. In most cases, when I leave it alone and come back later, the project miraculously looks much better! That’s when I say, “See Pam? You just have to let it dry!”. (You talk to yourself too, yes?)

This new business of mine has provided many lessons on slowing down and letting the process happen. Processes take time. The time spent has value. My brain knows that. The challenge is that I’m inundated with messages of instant transformation, quick results, and sped-up images that shout “hurry up”. Ok, ok, I take full responsibility for my HGTV home makeover and Instagram craft video obsession that feed this super-fast mentality. At least, I’m giving myself points for acknowledging that! (I’m guessing many of us have been inspired to tackle purging our closets, started happily yanking things out then collapsed on the bed thinking “why is this so HARD?” “Why can’t it suddenly be beautifully organized and pretty?”.)

So, what is the antidote to the instant world? Well, I think it is our own human brain. We have to use that mushy pink muscle to keep it strong. For me, I’m doing my best to feed and exercise it every day. Good sleep, more protein in my diet, and word puzzles. Seeking out Instagram accounts that show the slow process of art, crafts and life. And simply telling myself, sometimes out loud, “this is going to take time” so my brain gets the message to slow down and let the paint dry.

My hope is, that if you have read this far, your breathing has slowed. Maybe you’ve exhaled, relaxed your shoulders, even nodded your head in agreement. I hope your brain is thanking you for feeding it with a little time and patience. Whether you are creating art, a project or dinner – remember to tell yourself that things take time and that is ok. Oh, and since my other mantra has always been “celebrate everything”, let’s also remember to acknowledge the value of our efforts!

I’m grateful for you being here and following my rambling thoughts. Today, I want to leave you with a simple wish. Whenever you’re in the frustration phase of something, I hope you’ll take a deep breath, practice your patience and just let the paint dry.

Stay creative, my friend.

(Oh, and sure, I’m a GenX’er but I don’t blame social media for my need for instant gratification. Listen, my desire to fold my arms, blink my eyes, and have something appear before me was fully formed in my childhood thanks to the classic show “I Dream of Jeannie”. Throw in “Bewitched” and that it explains it all. Let me know what show you are blaming? Lol)
